Relay Hawaii is a service overseen by the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission that provides full telephone accessibility to people who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, DeafBlind, or have a speech disability. Relay Hawaii allows the people of Hawai`i or kama’aina to communicate with friends, ohana, and anyone over the phone using text-telephone (TTY), captioned telephone (CapTel), online, or using wireless devices through specially trained Relay Operators. The equipment and services are available at no cost to all qualified residents of Hawai`i or kama`aina. Specially trained Relay Operators facilitate the calls.  Calls can be made to anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with no restrictions on the number, length, or type of calls.  The service is free for anyone to use and is funded by a surcharge on all telephone bills. What is 711?

Dialing 711 is easy and fast. It automatically connects you to a relay operator, without having to remember and dial a ten-digit access number.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Everyone can use 711

Follow these simple steps:

  1. Dial 711 (or the Relay Hawaii toll-free number appropriate for your specific call. Click here)
  2. A specially trained Relay Operator will answer and identify themselves by their operator number.
  3. Give the Relay Operator the phone number of the person you are calling.
  4. The Relay Operator will connect you with the person you are calling and assist you with communication.

711 is NOT an emergency number and should not be confused with 911. However, if you use a TTY and cannot obtain emergency services on 911, you may call 711 and tell the Relay Operator you have an emergency for the Hawaii State Police.

All states have 711.  There is no fee for using 711 service.


What if 711 is Not Working?

People who are in an office setting and have extension numbers may experience difficulty as a result of 711 not being programmed into the building’s PBX system.

If you have issues reaching 711 in an office environment, contact your IT specialist, office administrator, or local telephone service provider to ask for the 711 dialing in your building.
