Hearing Carry-Over (HCO) service allows a person with a speech disability who can hear to make a call by typing to the Relay Operator who reads the message to the other party. The HCO user can hear the other party’s spoken responses through the phone.

How Does HCO Relay Work?

  • 1

The HCO user types to the Relay Operator.

  • 2

The Relay Operator reads aloud the typed message to the other party.

  • 3

The other party speaks directly to the HCO user.

Other HCO Features

The Relay Operator specializes in all types of STS calls, such as STS to TTY, STS to VCO, or STS to HCO. With this service, you may have to specify your call type to the relay service.

HCO to TTY

The STS user can speak to the Relay Operator. Then the Relay Operator types what the STS user says to the TTY user. Whatever the TTY user types goes back to the Relay Operator who will read aloud to the STS user.

HCO to VCO

The HCO-VCO relay service is not available. However, the VCO user and HCO user could simply call each other directly on their own TTY’s. The HCO user would speak directly to the VCO user and the VCO user would type to the HCO user.

HCO to HCO

The HCO-HCO relay service is not available. However, both HCO users could simply type each other directly on their own TTY’s.
